Innovation Leads to Victory

Nike Running footwear is synonymous with innovation. Year after year, new designs and technology emerge that help runners achieve results they couldn’t produce last year or even last month. With this in mind, it should come as no surprise that the ingenious designers and footwear developers here at Nike have done it again with the new Zoom Victory spike, designed as the ultimate race day spike for elite athletes competing at events ranging from 800-5000 meters.

FLYWIRE TECHNOLOGY
What makes this spike so special? Well, in the world of elite middle-distance running, less than a second can often be the difference between a champion and an also-ran. So who wants any extra weight holding you down? Not the folks here at Nike and certainly not any of our athletes. That’s why the new Zoom Victory spike weighs a mere 93 grams. By way of comparison, the closest competitor weighs in at 140 grams. This dramatic reduction in weight is made possible by the revolutionary Flywire technology embedded in the upper. These high-tensile nylon fibers help lock down the foot and create a snug, sock-like fit, eliminating the need for a traditional overlay-based upper. The Flywire is connected by a thin layer of Span mesh, giving the foot maximum breathability. The fit is so secure that the heel counter has even been removed, giving the shoe a unique look. The spike plate is a slightly modified version used on the Zoom Miler, helping the runner glide easily up on their toes in competition.

ZOOM VICTORY+
There is also a Zoom Victory+ trainer utilizing the same lightweight Flywire technology in the upper combined with a Cushlon and Zoom Air midsole/outsole platform giving it a smooth ride that feels fantastic underfoot.

ATHLETE TRIALS AND TESTIMONIALS
Although the Zoom Victory spike will not be available to consumers until October, it will surely grace the feet of many athletes this summer in Beijing, just as it was used by select competitors last summer in Osaka for the World Championships. Before the Men’s 1500m, eight pairs were given to select athletes to try out with the intention of acquainting them with the fit and feel of the new technology. As it turns out, six of the athletes ended up racing the 1500m final in the Zoom Victory spike, taking six of the top eight spots, including race winner Bernard Lagat. Lagat also won the 5000m over Kenya’s Eliud Kipchoge, a previous World Champion himself, who used the spike and was blown away by its performance. Other outstanding performances already achieved in the Zoom Victory spike include Alan Webb’s American Record-setting performance in the Mile and Kara Goucher’s 10,000m bronze medal in Osaka.

With the approval of the world’s best athletes, the ultra-lightweight Zoom Victory spike is blazing a trail of innovation that leads straight to success, and for many of these athletes, nothing short of victory.
