Coach Jay: Tip of the Week

TIP: BE NUMBER 1

In Binary computer code there only two options: zero means “off” and the number 1 means “on”. That’s it, just zero and 1, on and off.  You should view your daily ancillary (also known as general strength) work in the same light—you either did some exercises to become a better runner or you didn’t; zero or 1. Now, I hope those of you who read the Weekly Q&A posts are a little surprised by this training tip because I firmly believe that most training should exist on a continuum and that there are few absolutes, few black and white issues when it comes to intelligent, consistent training. But if you’re committed to becoming a better runner and if you’re committed to the challenge of staying injury-free this winter, then you owe it to yourself to blunt about your training—you either did some ancillary work today or your didn’t…so you might as well be number 1.
